Here is a piece painted especially for the Eagle Gallery’s “Contrast” exhibition and the first after the mammoth production run that was the “Urban and Rural” exhibition.
It was a little tricky to pick myself up and return into painting mode. I also added to the pressure by painting ‘live’ on the NaishArt facebook page. – I say live, what I mean is that I posted daily updates with photos of progress. The danger here is that it all goes horribly wrong with the possibility of “Ignore yesterday’s post – I’ve started again!” as a post. It actually worked fairly well, though I don’t really like this exposed approach. Still it annotated the process with I think only one “I’m hating this picture today!” moment.
I’d come across the “Holiday-Snap” this painting is based on while going through my late mother’s collection of family photos. I felt it suited the brief with the ‘impossible’ dark sky contrasting with the brightly lit foreground. I used modeling compound on the sky alone to emphasize the divide and show solidity beside transience.
The live on facebook approach did mean I felt supported in the process and slightly less alone. When you feel out of love with the piece and the process in general it’s nice to be told it’s not that bad!
I think there’s enough in the piece to be of interest. I kept the painting fairly loose; so hopefully the energy of the moment can still be felt.
