We spent a week at the end of January 2014 in an English Country Cottage near Leek. We had discovered Lake Rudyard on a previous trip through the area as we found a disused railway on the opposite side of the lake which had a miniature railway running along part of it. My wife discovered “The Boathouse” which was a beautiful new building right on the edge of the lake with beautiful views from the property.
The second piece from this holiday was done in two sittings “en plein air” more like “en freezing air”. Speedy painting was the order of the day both to keep warm and to not spend longer than absolutely necessary in this environment. Packing up on the first day was timed to perfection as rain fell soon after. Returning to the painting a couple of days later was handy as I could reflect in the warm on what needed doing. The jetty needed to taper into the distance more to reflect the downward sloping. The railings were also done on day two with the assistance of masking tape.
As it got darker on the second sitting some lights became visible amongst properties on the opposite bank. As with the previous painting, working from life, one discovers new previously unnoticed elements in the scenery. I do a pick and mix approach where not every element depicted is of the exact same time frame. – Not always sensible if they imagery looses believability, but another reason for using painting as my medium of choice above photography.
