With the one man show planned and looming, I had earmarked a 60cm square painting on the model, which was to be this painting. As has happened more than once now, the screen saver photograph slideshow on my computer through up the obvious choice.
I’d already painted the other end of this bench (hence the title) as “Back to Nature” – and I have to admit I didn’t take these photos. It is from a series of photos taken by my wife when she was with her sister near the museum in St. Albans. In this instance, I knew I didn’t have long to complete it so I knew I would be sculpting with a palette knife for more than the first pass.
I’m very pleased with the results; nice summery colours with enough energy to suggest the flowers are alive. I also like the ‘pasted on’ look of the bench with its ethereal quality.
