We spent three days up in Liverpool for my wife’s cousins wedding around August 3rd 2013. We stayed at the Staybridge suites overlooking the Echo Arena and the Mersey beyond. This is that view painted from inside the window. It was quite intriguing to paint, as much of the middle distance detail moved about as it was sometimes working cranes or indeed cranes on boats. As with many paintings – you observe better when painting a scene over a period of time.
My wife’s criticism of this piece is the lack of seagulls that periodically would take up residence on top of the echo arena roof. True it may have added some interest but to be honest, there are a couple flying in the sky – which my wife describes as grubby marks where the paintbrush slipped. – You can’t get the staff these days.
