167. Rudbeckia - Skinny Dripping
Acrylic on deep edged canvas
609mm x 305mm
£175
Exhibited at The Wynd Window Display, 30th March -9th April 2026
Here I further abstract an image of Rudbeckia plants as seen in my previous painting “166 Rudbeckia-In the Round”. On this occasion, my starting off point was the need to fill a space in a special window display at the Wynd Gallery, Letchworth. I had a two-week slot at the gallery which I thought an opportunity to showcase my rudbeckia series of paintings. Virtually laying out the space on a computer I determined a thin piece would work well on the end wall of the window space.
I found an appropriate blank canvas in the loft and went back to one of my earliest works “22. Yellow Burst – Six Colour Remix” from 2012. This square image was distorted vertically and positioned off centre. It was then back to the old routine of filling in the coloured areas on top of the pre-painted yellow ground. Quality of line is key, and a final visit to the yellow ensured the petal shapes became dominant.
By its very nature the image can look wallpaper like or as though created with the screen-printing process. This disappointed me and so I felt it needed some thing else. At this point I added ‘red gold’ over some of the purple elements. This added a bit more depth and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’. Tonally like the mauve, this element is only apparent at close proximity to the piece and under certain lighting. Hopefully enough though to enhance the experience of viewership.
