I have been going to life drawing on a Monday for a while now or “naked people Mondays” as my wife likes to call it. Previously I have always seen life drawing as an exercise (a difficult one) but not something to generate presentation pieces. I know some people enjoy this type of work, however, so I decided to look through my past works and create a finished piece from my endeavours.

It shows another side to my output too, and as the title suggests, I do undertake activities like what proper artists do!

The un-tutored sessions that I attend consist of short poses before a much-needed coffee break (always wonderful biscuits involved) followed by two longer generally 45-minute poses (depending on for how long the biscuits have been enjoyed). I have got into the habit of doing pencil work in all but the first after break 45-minute slot. It is at this point that the soft pastels emerge. The reasoning is that I have a longer period to image create and I can fix the image and tidy up a bit at the start of the final session. The final 45-minutes becomes (somewhat like a premier league football player) the cool down session after the extremes of the ‘match’ itself.

It is from these soft pastel works that I have edited exerts to form this triptych. “Proof of Life 1” shows the same male model on three different occasions.
