162. War of the Roses
Acrylic on deep edged canvas
Canvas size 61 x 30.5cm
£230
Exhibited at "8 days 4 artists", Eagle Gallery, 15th - 22nd November 2025
Exhibited at Christmas Show, Eagle Gallery, 24th November - 24th December 2025
Exhibited at "White Noise", The Wynd, 6th January - 12th Feb 2026
I’ve always been impressed with the multitude of roses in our garden, (Something inherited rather than instigated by us) and 2025 was a good display as ever. So, I painted it because it was there! I feel some sense of guilt that there is no profound message her but frankly feel free to insert your own meaning. Perhaps the top rose represents an evil political movement, and the bottom rose a religious doctrine, and we are the ladybird oppressed from both above and below. You get the drift – fill in your own suggestions to give the image pertinence.
So, this is a fairly faithful recreation of some roses in our back garden. I started out with the intention of a speedy fluid piece; but the shape relationships intrigued me and detail took over. In my digital preparation, I removed some bird poop and added a ladybird plum centre for added something!
I enjoyed the short lived palettes, like the scene itself growing and changing and with a finite life expectancy. But as mentioned above the vignettes within the scene held my imagination and generated my “dancing with paintbrushes” experience.
