This is very much a piece determined by need over desire. Not to say that it doesn’t have merit as a piece of work, but its inception is based on servicing a need rather than existing for its own merits.
Let me explain. It’s five or six weeks until a joint exhibition at the Eagle Gallery and I’m doing plans and wall layouts of the Eagle Gallery to see what should go where. I’m thinking that one wall could have my remaining Rudbeckia pieces all together – but there aren’t quite enough to fill a wall. The solution is to create a new one that is the key element at 1 meter square. One of the great aspects of a solo show is that you can have more than your normal 2 pieces allowed in a general gallery show. What would a wall bathed in yellow flowers look and feel like – my interest was teased and so a new painting was born.
There is also the safe space aspect of doing this image too. I’d done it before so know how it works. I felt I could achieve this in tight time frame that I had and so “Rudbeckia.” was born. (the full stop hopefully suggests that this is my last visit to the is visual well.)
However, I do have a note to self. Painting 1m square canvases with a rigger brush are never going to be that quick – just saying.
