So, here’s the first offering of 2023 and we’re already into February. Artist’ block if you like – or just due to the natural relaxation period after the hub-bub surrounding the efforts required to fulfil the group show at the gallery last November.
Whatever it is, I need to improve productivity as I am exhibiting at the Eagle at the same November slot this year, this time with only one other 3d artist.
So why this image? Well, I was really drawn to the colourful nature of the occasion. This was just after a talk during last year’s London Hat week. Ironically only one of the three depicted is actually wearing a hat though I think the feather emanating from the background lady’s white bag might be connected.
There was also an interpretive challenge to be had with the weird composition of the lady’s head emerging from the other lady’s head. Representational meaning starts to drift when using a pixelated photo, so decisions had to be made. Maybe total abstraction is the best solution, but as usual I erred toward realism – hopefully the greying of the rear figure makes the readability of the image better? I still like the warm optimism this image gives; and hopefully there are also enough questions posed in this piece to make it worthwhile.
