This piece was an unused idea from the 2015 one man show “Urban and Rural” – can you guess whether its Urban or Rural? As stated elsewhere, time got the better of me for the production of new work for that exhibition. However, the image remained strong in my mind and its existence would eventually come about.

It is based on a series of photos taken on a blustery day on a boat on the Mersey. (Ferry cross the Mersey perhaps) Periodical rain and the ominous presence of the ‘Liver building’ made a strong graphic statement with its quite square on stance. I love how this clutter of the structures are at odds with one another and are also placed next to each other like a police identity parade. Having said that, I don’t intend this to be a negative, menacing view of Liverpool. Nor is this particularly an exercise in detail, as with most compositions it’s the balance in the shapes that leads me.

It did seem to take an age, very on/off with much procrastination. I do however like the process where different buildings are created on different days under different moods. Indeed, the fairly ‘last minute’ re-build of the liver building led to thin yellow masking tape strips being plastered horizontally across the piece to aid squareness. This felt like scaffolding and although not apparent to the viewer of the finished piece, it aided me in generating this almost formal architectural elevation.

So, this dinosaur of my in-tray has finally been laid to rest. There are one or two others that have haunted my mind for some years; I’ll let you know when I’ve faced them.
