Bit of an upside down painting this one. More than once I have painted expressively in the top sky area of a painting, with the details in the architectural area towards the bottom being achieved with a tighter more considered style. In this instance however, the top half was accurately rendered with more expressive painting in the water reflection area beneath. A point lost on most I should think, but it interested me for some reason.
This painting depicts a hotel swimming pool in Burbank, California on my very first visit to America in 2012. It was not the painting I had been planning for some years. Logged in the back of my mind was an image of mainly water with its various reflections and ripples with the depth warning sign tile at the pool edge at the bottom of the painting. The canvas was to be tall and thin with this somewhat flattened texture image. This composition had been intended this way from the first moment I stepped out on that quiet pool area.
Finding the appropriate canvas squirreled away in the loft, I set about composing the piece for real in 2021. My intended layout just didn’t work for me and I found myself more drawn to the very specific colours and warmth of the location. Numerous photos gave me the chance to play with the extreme portrait format, and I settled on the canvas quartered composition in this final version.
Not sure how I feel about this one yet. I was so convinced my original take on this project would come to pass one day that I don’t really feel invested in this as of yet.
