Well, this is “Broken Road 2” if you like a sequel to the “Broken Road” painting from 2015. Indeed, it is based on a photograph of the same road (Laburnham Grove, Luton) but on the opposite side.
This work is in response to a themed show at the Eagle called “Anthropocene” – a word which still feels alien to me however many times that I google it. As far as I understand it’s the geological age since significant human impact. On this basis, a depiction of a road surface appearing like strata through the earth seems apt to me.
For the longest time, I was uncertain of which way up the piece should go, but I ultimately decided that the turquoise ‘clouds’ should be at the top, with the yellow line providing a ground.
Compositionally, the line of stones across the centre might seem a no-no but I feel as a slightly uncomfortable texture study it works fine enough.
I am gaining quite a catalogue of distressed road and pavement surfaces – maybe I have found my oeuvre: expect more in the future.
