This piece took a little while for me to accept as a painting. The initial thought was to wrap up the canvas board in acetate and call it a browser piece. With little thought going towards its creation and only a few processes involved in production, it seemed a sham to claim it as a work of art. Although the wife found it to be complete, I felt I should add to it in some way. Perhaps add a gloss varnish to the dark areas, or add some marks to draw out some of the shapes I was starting to see. As the random processes used in its creation outweighed any conscious involvement from myself, I truly felt it did not merit a number.
As it’s been in limbo on the naughty step for a short period, it missed out on receiving the number 135 in the chronology of my art. Now adopted as a work for wall display, I will now confirm its status with a number, signature and frame. As these actions will occur within the “136 slot” I feel the order is not incorrect, indeed the thinking time is an important part of the process.
The methodology is much the same as painting 131 with the cling film wrap of my tear off palettes being used to print some splodges over a period of several weeks. Whereas painting 131 was a starting point, here it is all that was involved. A purer piece if you like.
Framing it also forces the viewer to take the shapes and swirls more seriously. See in it what you like, a product of our times and my mental state for sure, but I’d argue it’s the result of compositional ideas rather than political ones.
