Our recent holiday week in Matlock provided a good excuse for tracking down some disused railway goodness or indeed “disusedness” as we call it in the Naish household. The Monsal trail holds many delights, and towards the end of a day we stumbled across a wonderful double viaduct near a former station in the area of Miller’s dale, ripe for exploration. One of the viaducts was part of the trail while the other was gated off. I subsequently discovered one of the viaducts is still owned by Network Rail – presumable the shut off one. Upon traversing it the view you see here emerged looking from one bridge over the top of the adjacent one. A bit of tippy toes photography and I managed to capture it for reference. I knew the moment I set eyes on this scene, it had to be a painting. To me a “typical” Peak District scene. With rain in the air, I figured this was quite representative of Derbyshire!
The process itself was quick by necessity. I had a week until the “New Painting” exhibition would hang at the Eagle Gallery in Bedford, and I wanted to enter a second piece alongside “The Church at Kimpton”. Following my standard tracing process, I utilised several palettes of various colours to be able to “slap it on”. Indeed, to be able to paint different areas concurrently, I had to have all the colours on the go at once. Several speedy sessions using relatively more paint than I would normally use for a painting this size, the picture was complete. Hope you like it, I must say I’m very pleased with the results.
