114. Panto Fairies
Various Acrylics on cardboard
1000mm x 600 mm (four off)
NFS
Interesting side project here. As part of the stage setting for the Toddington Amateur Dramatics Society (TADS) Panto for 2018, a Fairy school scene needed portraits of previous Schoolmasters/ Principles, two male and two female.
Without a comprehensive brief, I therefore had great freedom in what I created. So, it’s off to Google with search terms Fairy King and Queen. As costumes were not finalised, one was not sworn to a “house style”. To avert issues of the previous fairy leaders looking different to the “present staff” I imagined these characters to be from over a long period of time, indeed even the wing structure ‘evolves’ between portraits.
The four pieces were created in no particular order, though from the painting stage were completed in the order shown above. I worked up a half size pencil sketch of each before gridding up and drawing the full-size pieces. I cribbed a lot of reference material from the internet, including pictures of an actor from Game of Thrones and Sir Ian McKellen, for the final piece. It was a joy to mix all the elements together to create something new. Also fun to use gold and bronze acrylic paints - something I feel unable to treat myself to when doing "proper art"!
Because I didn’t want to take too long on the project (I have an exhibition in May to paint for don’t you know) I had to do a lot of speedy drawing and then painting. Not a bad discipline to partake in. This made me realise that I don’t do enough day to day drawing, though it was satisfying to know I can still achieve this.
Pleased with the results, - just hope it suits the set and pleases the director.
