Exhibited at The 66th Hertford Open, Cowbridge Halls, Hertford Sun 6th May - Saturday 19th May 2018
This painting has been in production for the longest time of any of my pieces. 22nd April 2018 saw the final dabs of paint applied after a period of approximately three years.
It had begun as a commission. The brief was to recreate my work Cacophony (Piece 71) but at 75% the original’s size. I used reproductions of “Cacophony” as reference rather than the original photographs of the view. The piece became the offspring of the original, an interpretation of an interpretation if you like – hence the title.
The commission aspect had been without deadlines and without exchanges of any monies – perhaps a fatal approach in a professional business sense. After house moving and creations of various other pieces, I returned to this piece yet again near the end of last year. I duly sent my client up to date images of progress offering to pull out of the commission as it had taken so long. She duly accepted, and the piece was free to be entered into regular shows and competitions. My next aim was to have the piece ready for the Hertford Open in May.
The main difference to the original is the background colours are brighter and less recessive than the original. I’m not too offended by this as I’m not in the business of creating some out and out facsimilia and the “Once Removed” comes into play. Shapes on the piece vary as do exact colours and some simplification may occur. Although a new picture, its lineage is clear.
