There are two themed shows a year which members of the Eagle Gallery can exhibit at, and “Through a Window” was the first one of 2017. This one was a fairly rapid turn around, and so using an image I had on the back burner seemed ideal.
This view is from a small window in a utility room in the “Odyssey Cinema” St. Albans. At least a more apt description would be the derelict “Odeon” cinema in St. Albans as it was when this was taken. I give a fuller description of this place in pictures 11, 44, 45 and 46, which were taken at the same location on the same day.
Part of the appeal of this image was the contrast to the other views found within the cinema. Everything else is really texture related and feels musty where as here a sudden break in the time capsule sees a world of growth and change. It becomes more than a window but also a portal between times, an escape route from a windowless world. Colours were suddenly bright – almost too much so.
I decided to manipulate the image to fit the deep edged canvas that I chose. I straightened up the frame edges and cut and moved foreground objects to improve the composition.
It was a joy to paint, exploring the various layers present.
